Bumiputera entrepreneurs have been urged to produce more halal food products to meet the needs of Muslims and at the same time help fuel the country's economy.
The chairman of the committee on the focus group for the development of Bumiputera entrepreneurs and cooperatives Penang, Muhamad Farid Saad said, small medium enterprises (SMEs) can help in this regard with the assistance of cooperatives.
"Such food products can also help enhance the income of the entrepreneurs and provide consumers with a wider choice of halal products," he told reporters this after officiating the Penang Bumiputera Entrepreneurs (PenBEX) Mini Carnival 2015 at Vision Park, Bertam, here.
Organised by the Penang Groombig Entrepreneurs Cooperative (Kunang) the event is a curtain-raiser to the PenBEX from May 30-June 7.
Muhamad Farid said 70 entrepreneurs were under the patronage of Kunang and some of their products were being marketed at three branches of the Aeon Big supermarket at Bukit Minyak, Seberang Jaya and Alor Setar, Kedah.
"This is an encouraging achievement and a two-storey shoplot building in North Seberang Perai will be renovated to enable products of members to be marketed more systematically.
"The premises will also be made a platform for them to expand their business and improve production of local products," he added.
