Govt committed to sustaining food production

ZAKRI: The government continues to ensure priority is given to the agricultural sector in enhancing national income and ensuring food safety
The government, through the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), remains committed to sustaining food production and supply for the country, especially rice.
Its Science Adviser and Co-Chairman Prof Emeritus Datuk Seri Dr Zakri Abdul Hamid said this year, MIGHT had come up with a lot of alternatives as well as research and development (RnD), to ensure the production of food remained sufficient.
"The government continues to ensure priority is given to the agricultural sector in enhancing national income and ensuring food safety and security.
"In the recent budget, a sum of RM5.8 billion was allocated for agricultural development programmes, including high-technology applications for food production, and capacity building," he said in the opening remarks at a High Level Strategy Meeting and Workshop on Rice RnD for Malaysia here, today.
Zakri also highlighted the importance of developing a comprehensive rice security framework for Malaysia.
The two-day meeting and workshop from today by MIGHT, is supported by world renowned expert organisations in rice, the United Kingdom's Rothamsted Research,
Malaysia Biotech Corp and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
The event has also the participation of 50 key Malaysian organisations working on rice RnD.
