THE local business fraternity yesterday was shocked with the unexpected move of Malaysia Airlines CEO Peter Bellew departing the company after just over a year in charge to return to Ryanair as chief operations officer.
Ryanair on Tuesday announced that Bellew would be rejoining its team based in Dublin on Dec 1.
The 52-year-old Bellew, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said that success for Malaysia Airlines is within its grasp. Another 4 per cent to 5 per cent in monthly revenue is required for the company to swiftly move to profits.
He lauded Khazanah Malaysia, which owns the national carrier, stating that it had been incredibly supportive to him personally and corporately.
On his Instagram, the Irishman took a different tune.
Indeed, no words of farewell from him, except for well-wishers, who have posted their encouragement and support as seen on his personal Instagram account (@bellewpeter).
In a touching gesture of Malaysia spirit, Bellew uploaded a Deepavali musical video greeting wishing Malaysians a Happy Deepavali. A nice touch, indeed!
It is no secret that Bellew has grown fond of Malaysia. On his social media, Bellew keeps no reservations to make his immense fascination for almost all things Malaysia open.
His Instagram posts, for instance, were often about the proud CEO – with a series of photos taken with MH pilots, crew and ground staffs.
In an Instagram video posted in September, a guitar-toting Bellew was featured singing a patriotic tune titled, “Aku Negaraku”. The clip was aired in a programme on Astro AWANI later..

Since the announcement about his imminent departure was made by Ryanair on Tuesday, Bellew has been flooded with messages by well-wishers on his social media.
What awaits him in his future endeavours? Bellew is tasked to tackle the pilot shortages that has resulted in it cancelling more than 20,000 flights over the upcoming winter season. In a nutshell, he will be responsible in flight operations, ground operations and engineering, Ryanair said in a statement.
All the best, Mr Bellew!
