MAS employees in Sarawak will know fate by today or tomorrow

Malaysia Airlines' employees in Sarawak will receive a letter by today or June 3 on whether or not their service with the national carrier has been terminated.

Nevertheless, Airlines Workers Union Sarawak (AWUS) is confident that only a small number in Sarawak would be affected by the termination exercise.

A source from AWUS, which has about 800 MAS employees at various levels as its members, said the situation in Sarawak might be different from the peninsula as MAS did not have excess of staff from the state.

"But we wait and see tomorrow and June 3 because the staff will be getting their letters by hand," he told Bernama when contacted here Monday.

The source said MAS sole shareholder, Khazanah Nasional Berhad had earlier promised that terminated staff would be provided skill training at the corporate company's development centre.

He said the staff would potentially be absorbed into subsidiary companies under Khanazah Nasional Berhad or other airlines interested to employ them.

Chief executive officer-designate Christoph Mueller Monday said more than 40 projects had been identified to position the company for future growth, including overhauling the information technology (IT) system and refurbishing inflight offerings.

"These projects will impact all aspects of the airline and create an ongoing, sustainable operation," he told a media briefing here today.
