OIC calls on Qatar to honor its commitments in GCC

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) General Secretariat, has called upon Qatar to honour its previous commitments and agreements signed within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), particularly with regard to ceasing support for terrorist groups, their activities and ending media incitement.

In an OIC statement, the General Secretariat underscored the need for all member states, including Qatar, to adhere to the principles of the OIC Charter.

The charter calls for adhering to the policy of good neighbourliness, respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of member states, and non-interference in their domestic affairs.

The General Secretariat said that it has been following the current developments in the Gulf region closely namely the severance of diplomatic ties with Qatar by a number of OIC member states.

Four Arab nations - Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain - had cut ties with Qatar accusing it of support for Islamist militants and Iran, and reopening a festering wound two weeks after US President Donald Trump''s demand for Muslim states to fight terrorism, according to reports.

Reports said that the four nations severed diplomatic relations with Qatar in a coordinated move while Yemen, Libya''s eastern-based government and the Maldives joined later. - BERNAMA
