Petronas says the appointment of its adviser is the prerogative of the government.
Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) respects any decision taken by the government on the position of advisor to the national oil company.
"The appointment is the prerogative of the government," Petronas said in a statement.
The Cabinet today unanimously agreed to terminate the appointment of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as adviser to Petronas.
The Prime Minister's Office, in a statement, said the Cabinet felt that since Dr Mahathir no longer supported the government, he should not be holding any position associated with it.
"The Cabinet discussed the actions of the former Prime Minister, particularly in launching the 'Citizens' Declaration' jointly with opposition party leaders last week," it added.
Dr Mahathir was appointed adviser to Petronas after he stepped down as Prime Minister in 2003.
He remains the chairman of Proton Holdings Bhd, a post to which he was appointed in June 2014.
