Samsung Malaysia Electronics Sdn Bhd has rolled out its mobile payment service, 'Samsung Pay' in Malaysia today, through strategic partnerships with banks and merchants in its quest to provide cashless payment service to its customers.
Its Mobile and IT Business Unit Vice-President, Lee Jui Siang, said its partners included Malayan Banking Bhd, CIMB Bank Bhd, Citibank Bhd, Standard Chartered Bank Bhd and Hong Leong Bank Bhd.
"We are optimistic of seeing a strong consumer interest and readiness to adopt mobile payments in Malaysia, with Samsung Pay's secure and user-friendly facility," he told reporters after the launch of Samsung Pay here today.
He said the launch of this service was in line with the Malaysian government's efforts to see Malaysia's transition to a cashless society, through the implementation and acceleration of e-payments adoption.
"Samsung Pay service is actually perfect for the country because Malaysia has its national e-payment strategy with the ultimate goal of becoming a cashless society," said Lee.
Lee said since its debut in the US and South Korea two years ago, Lee said, the service had also been made available in Singapore, Australia, Thailand, Spain, China, Puerto Rico and Brazil.
Samsung Electronics had also partnered with local loyalty card firms such as B Infinite, BonusLink and Sunway Pals, which offered its members the opportunity to collect points at its partner outlets, which could be redeemed for purchasing purposes, he said.
In the long run, Lee said, the South Korean technology giant planned to convert Samsung Pay from a mobile payment service into a "mobile wallet".
In Malaysia, Samsung Pay would be available for Galaxy S7 and S7,edge, S6 edge+, Note5, Galaxy A5 and A7 users. - BERNAMA
