Volkswagen Group Malaysia Sdn Bhd plans to export its locally-assembled Jetta and Polo Sedan to Asean countries by next year.
Managing director, Armin Keller, said the group was currently in talks with its partner, DRB-Hicom Bhd, and the Malaysian government.
"We have reached the local content target of 40 percent which is necessary for us to export our models and hopefully we can start to do it next year," he told reporters here.
He said the group was looking at Asean countries as its export destinations due to massive demand.
"Currently, four Volkswagen models, including Passat, Jetta, Polo and Polo Sedan, are locally-assembled," he said.
Keller said the DRB-Hicom plant in Pekan, Pahang has started to produce Volkswagen cars since 2012 with first model being Volkswagen Passat.
He said the plant managed to produce about 7,000 to 8,000 units of Volkswagen of all models this year.
"We are technically ready and now awaiting the approval from the authority before we proceed with the plan," he said.
Volkswagen group, a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG, was established in Malaysia in 2006. It currently offers over 20 Volkswagen models.
