The Barisan Nasional (BN) government will uphold Islam as the religion of the Federation while ensuring that other religions can be practised in peace and harmony.

This is stated in the BN election pledge launched by Prime Minister and BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak tonight in the wake of the dissolution of the Dewan Rakyat on April 3.

The BN also vows to assign jurisdiction over non-Muslim matters to a minister in the prime minister's department.

There's also the promise to promote the principles of moderation (wasatiyyah) in all undertakings and enhance initiatives to unite the ummah.

Another five-year mandate to govern the country will see the BN government provide more financial assistance to registered religious institutions and places of worship, and continue allocating land for the building of places of worship.

Tax exemption for contributions to the construction, expansion and upkeep of places of worships will also be increased.

A successful outcome in the election will see the BN government unlock income from developing wakaf land in cooperation with state religious authorities.

The BN will see to it that imam, mosque officials and KAFA teachers enjoy service-based salaries and increments, the manifesto said.

The coalition also promises to upgrade the quality of Sekolah Agama Rakyat and allow their students access to quality education and government education infrastructure.

Sekolah Agama Rakyat and sekolah pondok will also be assisted financially, the manifesto added.
