FX's horror anthology has been nominated 19 times this year, but can it finally win for Outstanding Miniseries, an award it has been nominated for every year since 2012?
The fourth season of "American Horror Story," "Freak Show," has earned the show its fourth straight nomination for Outstanding Miniseries. Unfortunately, the FX show might get upstaged by its competition, especially since this season hasn't been as much of a hit with critics as seasons past.
One of the shows standing in its way is HBO's "Olive Kitteridge," with both Bill Murray and Frances McDormand propelling it to potential success. ABC's offering to succeed 2014 winner "Fargo" is the anthology "American Crime," which marks the return of Felicity Huffman ("Desperate Housewives") to television.
British television programs will also provide stiff competition in the form of "The Honorable Woman," a spy series starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, and "Wolf Hall," a historical drama about Thomas Cromwell starring Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis.
'HBO the favorite for television movies'
These last few years, the premium cable channel has reigned supreme in the category thanks to wins for "The Normal Heart," "Behind the Candelabra," "Game Change," "Temple Grandin" and "John Adams."
For this 67th edition, HBO alone will have three films nominated in the category, including the very serious biopic of blues singer Bessie Smith starring Queen Latifah. "Hello Ladies: The Movie," a television movie adapted from the series "Hello Ladies," and "Nightingale," starring David Oyelowo, round out the HBO nominations.
Opening film at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014, "Grace of Monaco" was never released in American theaters but did air on Lifetime in May, making the Olivier Dahan and Nicole Kidman film eligible for the category.
"Killing Jesus," by the National Geographic Channel," and "Curtain: Poirot's Last Case" round out the category.
Winners will be announced on September 20. The ceremony will take place in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on Fox. Andy Samberg, star of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," will host the evening.
