To avoid going head to head with "Captain America 3" in theaters, Warner Bros decided to shift the release of "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" forward by around a month.
Initially, both films were set to bow on May 6, 2016, meaning that the superheroes would have given each other some serious competition at the box office.
Since Disney refused to change the date of its next "Captain America" movie, Warner Bros revised the production timeline on its DC feature and announced the new release date of March 25, 2016.
Now rather than clashing directly with a rival superhero, Batman and Superman will be in theaters at the same time as Paramount's "Beverly Hills Cop 4" with Eddie Murphy, which is due for release on the same day.
Warner: 10 new DC superhero movies by 2020
If Warner Bros wants to give the best chance possible to "Batman V Superman," it's partly because of the high expectations surrounding its superhero franchises in general. The studio recently announced the provisional release dates of 10 new DC Comics movies set to debut between 2016 and 2020.
Fans can already mark their calendars for August 5, 2016; June 23, 2017; November 17, 2017; March 23, 2018; July 27, 2018; April 5, 2019; June 14, 2019; April 3, 2020 and June 19, 2020. And of course, March 25, 2016.
While the titles of these new DC films were not revealed, fans are already busy placing their bets.
Reasonable guesses include a few "Justice League" movies to rival Marvel's "Avengers" franchise, a sequel to "Man of Steel" with Henry Cavill, and a solo Batman adventure with Ben Affleck.
Other speculation involves Wonder Woman, who is played by Gal Gadot in "Batman V Superman," or possibly even Aquaman.
With this new schedule, Warner Bros has upped the ante for Marvel and Disney, which have announced plans for five films between 2017 and 2019.
After the much-anticipated "Avengers 2" in April 2015, "Ant-Man" in July 2015, "Captain America 3" in May 2016 and "Doctor Strange" in July 2016, the studios have plans for new movies in their "Guardians of the Galaxy" (July 2017), "The Avengers," "Thor" and "Iron Man" franchises.
