Bollywood mourns the passing of legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, who was known as “King of Romance” in the Hindi cinema industry for his magical touch and outstanding success on the genre.
“I am shocked and numb. Can’t believe the news, the man who immortalised love, Mr Yash Chopra is no more,” actor Akshay Kumar tweeted.
“Shattering, hard to accept. Yash was more than a friend, a brother. I am numb and have no words to express my grief,” said Dilip Kumar, another legend in the Indian cinema.
Prominent Indian film director Mahesh Bhatt said Chopra's death was “heartbreaking news."
Chopra, 80, was admitted to Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai on Oct 13 due to dengue and passed away on Oct 21 reportedly due to multiple organ failure.
Born on Sept 27, 1932 in Lahore, then British India (now Pakistan), Chopra made his directorial debut in 1959 with the social drama Dhool Ka Phool.
Some of his notable romantic hits in his career spanning over five decades were “Kabhi Kabhi” (1976), “Silsila” (1981), "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" (1995), "Dil To Pagal Hai" (1997), "Mohabbatein" (2000) and “Veer-Zaara” (2004).
"An icon of Indian Cinema, he entertained many generations with his rare creativity. He had an aesthetic talent to make his films look larger than life,”
Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said in his tribute to the filmmaker.
Chopra's flourish in essaying romance and social drama was unmatched, said Manmohan, and the
filmmaker established the popularity of Indian cinema internationally and was honoured by many governments.
In 2005, Chopra received the prestigious “Padma Bhushan” award, the third highest civilian award in India. Among the other awards were two National Awards and 11 Filmfare Awards, of which four was for best director.
“He will be remembered by millions of his fans around the world and his work as a director and producer will be treasured by the nation for many more generations,” said Manmohan.
Chopra leaves behind a wife and two sons.
