Google Doodle commemorates P. Ramlee's 88th birthday

World's largest search engine Google today captured the 88th birthday of the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee with a caricature in its Google Doodle logo.

The logo features P. Ramlee sitting in the director's chair holding a loudspeaker and a sheet of script, with a guitar next to the seat.

It symbolises his extraordinary achievement in acting, directing as well as song writing and singing.

In its official website, Google Doodle explained the reason for selecting P. Ramlee's image in the caricatures

"Today’s Doodle highlights the Malaysian legend’s diverse artistry and shows him as people best remember him — sporting a thin mustache and a checkered suit, his head cocked slightly to the side."

Google Doodle also included two proposed sketches for the caricature of the great artist, which were eventually combined for the search engine's logo used today.

P. Ramlee, whose real name is Teuku Zakaria Teuku Nyak White, was born on March 22, 1929 in Penang.

The website also stated that P. Ramlee’s artistic achievements left a permanent mark on the cultural history of Malaysia.

It described the artist as a prolific actor, director, writer and musician who contributed to more than 60 films and composed around 250 songs.

"After his death in 1973, Malaysians kept his legacy alive, honoring him with posthumous awards and naming halls, museums, and other buildings after him," it added.

P. Ramlee breathed his last on May 29, 1973 of a heart attack.
