"Hunger Games" may be the new "Twilight": the saga scooped six awards at the 39th People's Choice Awards, a ceremony in which the prizes are awarded by the public.
"Hunger Games" came out unscathed from its bitter fight with "Avengers," "The Dark Knight Rises," "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Snow White & the Huntsman" to win the 2012 Favourite Movie award. The adaptation of the book by Suzanne Collins also won the Favourite Action Movie award.
The rest of its prizes went to the film's cast. Jennifer Lawrence was voted Favourite Movie Actress and Favourite Face of Heroism. Moreover, the trio she makes up with her co-actors Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson was praised for its on-screen chemistry.
Other winners in the movie category included Robert Downey Jr., who won two awards, Favourite Movie Actor and Favourite Superhero, for his interpretation of Iron Man. Meryl Streep was named Favourite Movie Icon.
Comedy-wise, the public recognized "Ted," Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. In drama, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" and actress Emma Watson scooped awards, together with Zac Efron.
"The Big Bang Theory" and "Grey's Anatomy" win for TV
The CBS series "The Big Bang Theory" was named Favourite TV Comedy of the year, while acting prizes were awarded to two actors from "Glee," Chris Colfer and Lea Michele.
"Grey's Anatomy" garnered public support in the drama category along with lead actress Ellen Pompeo and Nathan Fillion, lead actor in "Castle," which won Favourite TV Crime Drama.
Other TV winners included "True Blood" on cable as well as new series "The New Normal" and "Beauty and the Beast."
Three music prizes for Katy Perry
As well as being Favourite Female Artist, the American singer won Favourite Pop Artist for her "Part of Me" video. Nicki Minaj topped the hip hop category and Rihanna dominated in R&B as did Taylor Swift in country.
The public recognised One Direction's song "What Makes You Beautiful" and the band's song "Up All Night," but it was Maroon 5 who won the Favourite Band award. The Wanted was named Favourite Breakout Artist.
