Da Huang Pictures filmmaker Tan Chui Mui has issued her own “Letter of Demand” to advertising agency Leo Burnett Malaysia.
This comes a day after the agency issued a demand letter to Chui Mui and Da Huang Pictures following her allegations that the agency plagiarised her story for the 'Rubber Boy' Petronas Raya advertisement.
"I don’t have a lawyer to write a legal letter yet, so I will write this letter myself,” she said in a statement posted on her Facebook page.
She would like to demand for three things from Leo Burnett and gave the agency 48 hours to produce the evidences.
First, she would like the “Ah Pa’s Sacrifice” developed by Leo Burnett.
“For a fair comparison of the two stories, please show us the said script of “Ah Pa’s Sacrifice”, which was sent to my team on the 22 December 2014,” she said.
She also explained that she had sent a script to Leo Burnett creative director a day after they had an online group discussion titled “Petronas CNY”.
“Kindly prove that a similar story was written by Leo Burnett before the date 23 Dec 2014,” she said.
She said the pitch to James Yap was also based on a micro-short story published on December 13, 2011.
Her third demand is for Leo Burnett to prove that a similar story was written and published before December 13, 2011.
In other development, Leo Burnett said it does not see it appropriate to ventilate a dispute over social media.
“Leo Burnett will therefore be initiating legal proceedings against Tan Chui Mui and other parties to have the matter heard at the appropriate forum.
“In the circumstances, Leo Burnett will not comment further on the issue on social media and will let the Courts decide on the matter,” it said in a statement.
On Wednesday, Leo Burnett wants Tan Chui Mui to retract her statements posted on social media, which was then published on mainstream media.
“Despite an earlier explanation to Da Huang Pictures by Leo Burnett that their treatment and the Rubber Boy webfilm have different storylines, Tan Chui Mui continued to make these false allegations through her Facebook page,” the agency said.
