Some of the most-anticipated music of the year is due out in 2014's final months. Ahead, there are Pink Floyd's 15th studio album and offerings from Leonard Cohen and Taylor Swift, plus some major announcements that could come before the year is out.
Robert Plant
"lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar"
September 8 (UK)/ 9 (US)
Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant is to release his first album since 2010's "Band of Joy." Plant wrote of the 11-track album, which will feature his band The Sensational Shape Shifters, "It's really a celebratory record, powerful, gritty, African, Trance meets Zep," Plant said.
Listen to first track "Rainbow":
Banks
"Goddess"
September 9
Rising Los Angeles R&B artist Banks has been building buzz since her "London" EP came out last year, and her debut LP is one of the year's most hotly anticipated debuts. The danceable "Beggin for Thread" (offering a contrast to her often darker tracks) and accompanying video helped take her to another level of recognition.
"Beggin for Thread":
Leonard Cohen
"Popular Problems"
September 22/ 23
Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen has a new album planned to coincide with his 80th birthday, said to set "a new tone and speed of hope and despair, grief and joy." Its nine tracks were written with Patrick Leonard, who also participated on 2012's "Old Ideas."
Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett
"Cheek to Cheek"
September 23
The collaborative album comes after the two sang "The Lady is a Tramp" together for Bennett's Grammy-winning album "Duets II." Both duets and solo tracks for each artist will be featured, and Bennett announced the singers will tour jazz festivals in 2015 to promote the album.
"Anything Goes":
Charli XCX
"Sucker"
October 5 (UK)/ 21 (US)
British singer-songwriter Charli XCX made her major label debut in 2013 with "True Romance," but her big break came when her track "Boom Clap" was made lead single for the soundtrack of teen romance movie "The Fault in Our Stars." That top-ten single will be included on the album along with the just-released "Break the Rules."
"Break the Rules":
Taylor Swift
"1989"
October 27
In August, during a Yahoo live stream, Taylor Swift released details of her upcoming album and revealed the first single, "Shake It Off," plus an accompanying video. The album -- which she calls her "first documented, official pop album" -- follows on from 2012's Grammy-nominated "Red."
"Shake It Off":
Pink Floyd
"The Endless River"
October
The band's 15th studio album is to be based on unreleased recordings of work by late keyboardist Rick Wright dating from the time of 1994's "The Division Bell." David Gilmour and Nick Mason returned to the studio to complete the project, with solo vocal and chorus tracks added to the original recordings.
Foo Fighters
"Sonic Highways"
November 10
Dave Grohl and company recorded their eighth studio album in eight different US cities, with each track featuring a "local legend" such as Minor Threat, Ian MacKaye of Fugazi, Paul Stanley from Kiss and Joe Walsh of The Eagles. The project will be the subject of an eight-part HBO miniseries, debuting in October, also titled "Sonic Highways" and directed by Grohl, who called the album "a love letter to the history of American music."
And keep an eye out for...
U2
The Irish rockers have been dropping hints of an upcoming album or some time now. Although reports several months ago suggested the release had been postponed to 2015, in August a representative for the band told Rolling Stone, "We've always said an album is expected this year." The Irish Times also quotes a source who said fans could expect a single in September, an album in September or October, and a tour announced by year-end.
Adele
Rumors about Adele's third studio album have been swirling for months. Titled "25" as far as we know, it would follow up "21," which sold 26 million copies worldwide. In April, the British press talked of an October 2014 release, although other speculation puts the release in January 2015, in which case fans might expect at least a single by year-end.
Kanye West
Hot on the heels of his "Yeezus" album last year, Kanye revealed his plans for a seventh studio album, initially planning a summer 2014 release. What we know: It features production by Q-Tip and Rick Rubin, and a single, "All Day," was potentially going to release in August, when a rough bootleg surfaced instead.
Rihanna
In June, Rihanna, who tends to time her albums for November release and notably skipped 2013, hinted via Twitter that she was in the studio at work on her eighth album. Several songwriters and producers have come forward to say they're collaborating with her, including DJ Mustard, Chris Martin of Coldplay, David Guetta and Nicky Romero.
Frank Ocean
The Grammy-winning R&B singer is rumored to be readying his sophomore album, which would be the follow-up to the hugely successful 2012 album "Channel Orange." Nabil Elderkin, who directed the singer's "Pyramids" video, is quoted by BuzzFeed as saying, "It blows the sophomore-album myth out of the water."
