Tribe, the Astro Malaysia-owned online video streaming service is celebrating its first anniversary with a new milestone - one million downloads across Indonesia and the Philippines, an impressive feat amidst fierce competition in the video OTT space.
Iskandar Samad, Chief Executive Officer of Tribe said: “As Tribe celebrates its first anniversary, we are pleased to achieve one million app downloads amidst fierce competition in our markets. We are thankful to our partners and end users for their continued support, and we expect growth to continue being robust over the coming year. In addition to support from telco partners, we took advantage of the digital sphere and social media to reach digitally savvy audiences, and our efforts seem to have paid off.”
“Our loyal users really like Tribe’s linear experience, especially the Korean content channels and live sports. Oh!K, K-PLUS, KBS and TvN get solid viewership as users follow latest K-drama and K-music shows across these networks; while the Fox Sports channels get a lot of viewership particularly during motorsport races, badminton tournaments and Bundesliga matches.
"And when they miss episodes, they can always catch up through our VOD library. This is one of our strong value propositions – a live, and up-to-date content experience that resonates. I believe this also bodes well for our ads supplemented business model.”
With its growing number of active monthly users, Tribe is now open to collaborate with brands and partners who want to advertise on the platform. “With 80 per cent of our users under the age of 35, and a distinct female skew amongst the K-content viewers, Tribe would be the perfect channel for retail, fashion, and lifestyle brands focusing on the younger demographic," said Iskandar, adding that their platform’s existing ability to deliver video ad pre-rolls, and mid-rolls later in the year.
Tribe is also actively looking for new content partners in both markets with unique content that could resonate with the youth, especially those that could have ASEAN-wide appeal.
Its focus is not only premium content, they are also interested in aggregating “digital-first” short form content.
Last year, Tribe collaborated with well-known Indonesian directors Joko Anwar and Angga Sasongko to produce short films, and they are currently collaborating with Globe Studios to aggregate content created in collaboration with emerging talents in the Philippines.
Tribe is an online video streaming app, available with a 30-day free trial, and is currently priced at IDR 15,000 in Indonesia and PHP69 in Philippines for a monthly subscription.
