KUALA LUMPUR: The iconic unity-inspired song “We are the world” first recorded on January 28, 1985 continues to be a smash hit, even after 30 years.
This song was the brainchild of activist and entertainer Harry Belafonte who had wanted to gather the biggest singers in the world, and to use their talent and voice for a good cause.

This ever famous song was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and featured 45 international singers.
They included Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, and many more.
According to People.com, the song sold over 20 million copies and won three Grammys.
What’s more unprecedented, it raised $63 million for humanitarian aid in Africa.

Some fun facts about the song from People magazine:
- Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie finished the lyrics and melody on January 27, 1985 – a day before the deadline.
- The recording took place the same night as the American Music Awards which was hosted by Lionel Richie. Cindy Lauper and Tiny Turner performed at the awards.
- Apart from recording "We are the world", the stars also sang "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" in honour of Harry Belafonte.
- Cindy Lauper’s jewelry ruined one of the solo takes.
- At the end of the recording session, each singers asked for each other’s autograph. "Everyone wanted a memento that we could all keep ourselves. And we had the sheet music so we had all the other artists sign it. I don't think there was one out there who didn't get everyone to sign it,” said Kenny Rogers.
