Thanks to its release in China, where it was the top-earner with US$26.5 million, the reboot about the pizza-loving reptiles claimed the top spot at the worldwide box office over a particularly slow weekend.
Produced by Michael Bay, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" grossed $35.05 million worldwide during the weekend ending November 2, including $34.7 million outside the US.
"The Maze Runner" also rose in the ranking thanks to its Chinese opening, earning $13.7 million in the territory and claiming second place worldwide with $26.7 million.
Similarly, international revenues allowed David Fincher's "Gone Girl" and David Ayer's "Fury" to remain in third and fourth place respectively, earning $24.1 million and $23.7 million worldwide.
In spite of Halloween, the horror film "Ouija" brought in just $16.6 million, landing in fifth place. While the feature came in second at the US domestic box office with $10.9 million, this rank is to be put into perspective, considering the overall weak numbers.
"Ouija" is followed closely by two other movies with Halloween-appropriate themes: "Annabelle," with $15.5 million and "Dracula Untold" at $15.34 million.
"John Wick," in which Keanu Reeves plays a hit man who comes out of retirement, landed in eighth place. The actor's comeback -- a successful one from a critical standpoint, at least -- earned $14.65 million worldwide.
The only animated feature in the top 10, the Guillermo del Toro-produced adventure movie "The Book of Life," is in ninth place.
Finally, "Nightcrawler," starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a journalist who will stop at nothing to get a scoop, claimed the 10th spot at the global box office with $12.3 million. The drama was in first place at the US domestic box office with $10.909 million, just ahead of "Ouija."
