The Terengganu state government today announced that scholarships will be given to all six children of the victims of a boat mishap during floods, here, last week.
Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said the state government via the Terengganu Foundation (YT) would provide a RM50 scholarship a month for primary school and RM70 when they enter secondary school, effective immediately.
The six siblings were Nor Syafiqah Syahira, 12; Nor Izah Insyirah, 11; Muhammad Ifran Irshad, 9; Nur Intisar Iedihar, 6; Muhammad Aqil Amsyar, 4 and Nor Adifa Arissa, four months.
"The Terengganu Foundation will monitor their welfare including providing schooling needs.
"We also offer to place them at YT hostels when they enter secondary schools as there is free access to tuition, study equipment and others," he told reporters after receiving contributions for the floods from several public and private companies here.
In the incident on Dec 24, the children's parents, Nur Hayati Sulong, 37, and her husband, Suhaimi Awang, 37, were swept away by swift currents after a boat overturned in Kampung Geliga Che Akob, here.
Her body was found on Dec 26 and her husband's the next day by a search and rescue team.
