Floods: China contributes RM10,000 to Terengganu Govt

China contributed food items worth RM10,000 to the Terengganu government to assist flood victims in the state recently, said Mohamad Yusof, the Special Officer to Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman.

He said the items including rice, sugar, milk, instant mee, vermicelli and cooking oil were handed over to him by China Embassy's secretary Guo Xiaofeng at a special ceremony.

"China which has close ties with Malaysia understands the plight of Malaysians who were affected by the floods," he said at a ceremony to distribute the donated items here today.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had also received donations for flood victims from the Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr Huang Huikang at Wisma Perwira Angkatan Tentera Malaysia, Jalan Padang Tembak, Kuala Lumpur.

The donations included 2,950 tents (12 sq m X 36 sq m), 220 generator sets of 5 Kw (20 units) and 3 Kw (200 units), 400 water pumps (1.1 Kw), 45 water hose reels and 60 water purification devices (500 litres per hour).

The Chinese government will also be donating 400 temporary houses soon.

In IPOH, the Prime Minister's Department (JPM) in a statement to Bernama said JPM deputy secretary-general Datuk Mohd Zuki Ali is leading a 400-strong team of volunteers to help out in post-flood relief work in Kampung Gajah, Perak which was badly hit by floods.

The mission, from Jan 12 to 16, is the second phase of the department's mission to help flood victims after a similar one in Kelantan, it said.

The team comprises volunteers from the department, Puspanita JPM, Girl Guides Association IJM Corp. Berhad and Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara (IKBN) Seri Iskandar.

In PARIT, Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) donated perishable items like vegetables, fish and other essential items besides pillows, blankets, toto and cleaning items worth RM70,000 for use at relief centres in Perak Tengah.

Speaking to reporters after handing over the items at the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultan Muzaffar Shah flood relief centre in Lambor Kanan, its vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim Hashim said helping disaster victims was part of the varsity's corporate social responsibility.
