Tenaga Nasional Berhad-owned hydroelectric dams have helped to control what deemed as an ‘extraordinary’ floods and worst tragedy ever occured during this monsoon season.
TNB Corporate and Communications Manager, Datuk Ir.Mohd Aminuddin Mohd Amin explained, these dams were built to generate supply for electricity as well as control imminent havoc caused by the floods.
“Apart from generate electricity, the main function of these dams were to control excess water flow due to non-stop rain,” said Mohd Aminuddin in a statement, here today.
Continuous rain in several states in the Peninsula Malaysia since early December has increased water volumes at several TNB hydroelectric dams in this area.
The fact that TNB had released water at the dams has nothing to do with the floods occurrence but it is due to the torrential rain that has caused the water level to increase at several dams involved,” he said.
Mohd Aminuddin also said, until today, water from the four dams have been released in stages. The dams include Sultan Mahmud Power Electric Plant as well as Sungai Perak Power plants including the various dams in Bersia, Kenering and Chenderoh.
“The water level at Pergau Dam in Kelantan and Temenggor hydroelectric stations Sungai Perak were closely monitored to monitor water release from these dams," he explained.
He also added that the cooperation between TNB and local officials as well as the related agencies have to ensure that water is released in stages and under control at various hydroelectric dams based on a proper SOP, for the sake of the public safety.
“TNB will continue to monitor installation of several electrical substations at a few flood-hit areas and to switch off all electrical supplies if water level surpasses dangerous level.
“TNB has activated operation rooms at each State to monitor the sitation. For information, members of the public can contact TNB CareLine at 15454,” he said.
TNB has also cautioned the public to stress on safety aspects and keep vigilant all the time.
