Works Ministry rules out damage to Kelantan bridge
The Works Ministry confirmed that the Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge had suffered no damage in the floods now ravaging Kelantan.
The Works Ministry today confirmed that the Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge in Kota Baharu had suffered no damage in the floods now ravaging Kelantan.
It said in a statement that an examination showed that the bridge structure had not dislodged from the original pillars, contrary to claims by a post in the social media.
"A team of experts from JKR Malaysia and JKR Kelantan will continue to monitor the bridge to ensure that it remains safe and in good condition," it added.
The statement explained that the crosshead mentioned in the post had been built wider and designed without a pile cap extended to the pier head.
"This design allows for greater movement between the deck slabs when exposed to shock, and this is not hazardous. In fact, this is even stronger than usual, with improvements in the design of the bridge piling," it said.
The bridge, which links Kota Baharu to Pasir Pekan, Tumpat, remains closed to traffic as the waters of Sungai Kelantan have risen above the structure.
