GYEONGJU, South Korea: Strategic cooperation between Malaysia and the United States is founded on the principles of openness, fairness and mutual respect, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

This was among the key points conveyed by Anwar during his meeting with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on the sidelines of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM) here on Friday.

“The discussion also focused on efforts to strengthen bilateral economic ties, including a joint commitment between the US Treasury and Bank Negara Malaysia to ensure resilient currency exchange policies, financial market stability, and transparent and integrity-driven governance,” he said in a brief statement to Malaysian media here.

According to the Prime Minister, the meeting also touched on cooperation to reinforce a sustainable and open financial system, in line with APEC’s aspirations for inclusive and resilient growth.

Bessent expressed appreciation to Malaysia for the warm hospitality extended to US President Donald Trump and his delegation during their recent official visit to Kuala Lumpur.

“I once again conveyed my gratitude to President Trump for his visit, which reflects the strong commitment of US leadership in strengthening constructive, respectful and mutually beneficial bilateral relations,” said Anwar.

He also acknowledged the United States’ role in expanding global networks of investment, trade and peace, based on principles of dialogue, justice and mutual understanding.
