KUALA LUMPUR: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has issued a strong statement of solidarity and support following the powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on 28 March 2025, causing widespread devastation across parts of Myanmar and Thailand.
In a statement released by Malaysia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, on behalf of ASEAN, the regional bloc extended its deepest sympathies and condolences to the victims and families affected by the disaster, which has led to significant loss of life, injuries, and destruction in key areas including Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw, Bangkok, and Chiang Mai.
“ASEAN reaffirms its solidarity with the families and communities affected by the earthquake and its impact,” the statement read.
Acknowledging the scale of the disaster and the urgent humanitarian needs on the ground, ASEAN has pledged to support relief and recovery efforts in full coordination with Myanmar and Thailand, based on their identified priorities.
“ASEAN stands ready to support relief and recovery efforts based on priorities identified by Myanmar and Thailand,” Mohamad Hasan added.
To ensure a swift and coordinated response, ASEAN Member States will collaborate closely to provide humanitarian assistance and facilitate effective relief operations.
These efforts will be supported by the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre), which is expected to play a central role in logistics and emergency coordination.
The statement underscores ASEAN’s commitment to regional cooperation and shared responsibility during times of crisis, reinforcing the bloc’s foundational principles of mutual assistance and community.
