KUALA LUMPUR: BRICS International Malaysia has welcomed the outcomes of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent official visits to Russia and Turkmenistan, describing the engagements as significant steps towards strengthening Malaysia's long-term energy security and strategic economic partnerships.

Its chairman, Jaziri Alkaf Abdillah Sufian, said the reported assurance from Russia to support Malaysia's long-term oil, gas and diesel supply requirements comes at a crucial time amid growing uncertainties in the global energy landscape.

He said Malaysia must continue diversifying its energy partnerships, strengthening supply resilience and securing reliable energy channels to safeguard national interests.

"Of particular significance is the reported long-term energy supply commitment of at least 20 years, which, if implemented under sound commercial principles, could enhance Malaysia's energy security, improve cost management and support sustained industrial competitiveness," he said in a statement today.

Jaziri also welcomed the positive outcomes of Anwar's visit to Turkmenistan, noting that the strategic partnership involving Petronas and the Turkmen government marked an important milestone in bilateral relations that have spanned more than three decades in the oil and gas sector.

He said Petronas' continued presence in Turkmenistan reflects Malaysia's expertise in upstream energy operations, technology transfer, talent development and responsible resource management.

"The reported progress involving one of the world's largest gas fields is a significant achievement for Petronas and a strong affirmation of Malaysian capabilities on the international stage," he said.

According to Jaziri, the engagements with Russia and Turkmenistan underscore Malaysia's commitment to a diversified energy diplomacy strategy that enhances supply security, creates new commercial opportunities and positions the country as a credible bridge between ASEAN, Central Asia, Eurasia and the broader Global South.

He said the developments are consistent with Malaysia's independent, pragmatic and non-aligned foreign policy, while also strengthening South-South cooperation and increasing economic flexibility in an increasingly multipolar global order.

"Energy security remains a critical pillar of national resilience. A robust long-term cooperation framework with Russia, complemented by deeper upstream energy collaboration with Turkmenistan, can support Malaysia's long-term economic objectives while creating opportunities for Malaysian companies across trading, refining, logistics, technology, training, infrastructure and investment sectors," he said.

Jaziri stressed that any future agreements should be supported by rigorous due diligence, transparent governance, strong commercial safeguards and full compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

He added that the Prime Minister's engagements with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov demonstrate Malaysia's ability to maintain constructive relations across major global blocs while advancing its sovereign economic priorities.

He said the latest developments could pave the way for broader cooperation in areas including energy transition, technology, food security, the halal industry, Islamic finance, industrial development, the digital economy, education and regional connectivity.

Jaziri also called on policymakers, businesses and stakeholders to build on the momentum responsibly to strengthen Malaysia's long-term resilience, economic competitiveness and role within the emerging Global South and evolving BRICS economic framework.
