BEIJING: China opposes all unilateral tariffs, the foreign ministry's spokesperson told a daily news briefing on Friday (July 24), adding that trade wars do not serve any parties.
“China's position on the economic and trade issues between China and the United States is consistent and clear. We oppose all forms of unilateral tariff measures,” foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a news conference in Beijing.
The remarks came as the Trump administration imposed new tariffs of 10% and 12.5% on goods from 60 trading partners, including the European Union and China, over allegations of lax enforcement of forced labor bans, just as a temporary 10% global tariff expired. China is accused by the U.S. of detaining Uyghur minorities in work camps, which Beijing denies.
Prior to Friday's action, China's tariff rate had fallen to 10%, excluding the 25% imposed during Trump's first term on industrial goods.
