CHINA-U.S. relations are an "asset, not a liability" for U.S. President Donald Trump in the upcoming midterm elections, Chinese scholar Wu Xinbo said at a high-end interview during the 13th Beijing Xiangshan Forum on Tuesday (September 16).
Wu, professor and dean of the Institute of International Studies at China's Fudan University, said Trump needs a successful narrative on China policy to boost support, adding that Trump is unlikely to make an issue of the Taiwan question.
Wu also warned that "Taiwan independence" forces are misjudging the situation by underestimating the mainland's resolve and expecting U.S. protection. "If 'Taiwan independence' triggers a cross-strait conflict, the United States will not go to war for it," Wu said.
Delegations from almost 100 countries, regions and international organizations will attend the 13th Beijing Xiangshan Forum that opens on Tuesday in Beijing. This year's forum, themed "Build Consensus on Stability, Advance Security Governance Together," features four plenary sessions and eight parallel sessions.
