Cyprus Cabinet revoked the citizenship of Jho Low

The Cyprus Cabinet on Thursday reportedly revoked the citizenship status granted to businessman Jho Low, who is wanted in connection with the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case.

According to The Cyprus Mail, sources confirmed the cancellation of his passport and stated that the decision was made based on the recommendation of the Minister of Interior, Nicos Nouris.

Prior to this, the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) reported that the decision was made after the Minister of Interior received new information regarding Jho Low.

The news outlet claimed that the Cypriot government in March realized that there was insufficient evidence to grant citizenship to Jho Low before the Ministry of Interior contacted Interpol for additional data.

Based on the Interpol data, the ministry then recommended the cancellation of Jho Low's passport.

Meanwhile, The Cyprus Mail added that despite being labeled a "high-risk individual," there were parties in Cyprus who filed citizenship applications on behalf of Jho Low.

The portal also alleged that the businessman transferred nearly 6 million euros to an account at the Bank of Cyprus, in addition to purchasing a seaside villa in Ayia Napa for 5 million euros and obtaining citizenship a few days later.

Jho Low was granted Cypriot citizenship in 2015.
