Earthquake of 4.7 magnitude shakes western Nepal

A fresh earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale shook western Nepal, early Wednesday.

The epicentre of the earthquake was in Humla, about 600 kilometres northwest of Kathmandu, according to the National Seismological Centre (NSC).

The Humla quake was a fresh one and had no relation to the April 25 earthquake, said Bijaya Adhikari of NSC.

No damage from the fresh earthquake has so far been reported. Similarly, an aftershock of the April 25 earthquake was felt in Kathmandu and its surrounding districts, Wednesday.

The NSC said its epicentre was in Dolkha, 85 kilometres east of Kathmandu.

This was the first aftershock in 24 hours since Tuesday.

Since Sunday, the number of aftershocks has declined to one each day.

More than 30,000 aftershocks including 295 of over 4.0 magnitude have been recorded since the April 25 earthquake which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale.

This earthquake and its aftershocks have killed at least 8,600 people, injured over 22,000 and damaged property worth billions of dollars.

Nepal has estimated the reconstruction of the damaged structures will require at least US$5 billion and has vowed to complete the reconstruction works in three years.
