THE European Union (EU) maintains its position that it will not lift any sanctions against Russia until the Ukraine conflict ends, European Commission Chief spokeswoman Paula Pinho said during a briefing in Brussels on Monday.

Pinho reaffirmed the bloc's stance when asked about the EU's response to the U.S. proposal to purchase Russian gas as part of a possible settlement of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The European Commission believes that coordinated sanctions measures between the EU and the United States could play a decisive role in bringing the conflict to an end, the spokeswoman said.

The United States struck an agreement with Russia on October 9 to release more Russian diesel into global markets and announced an energy infrastructure ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
