Fog, haze cancelled more than 100 flights in Nepal

Lingering fog and haze have led to the cancellation of more than 100 domestic flights over the last five days at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport, Xinhua news agency reported.

"Fog and haze that have been disrupting flights since Sunday continued even on Thursday," said the airport's domestic terminal chief Purna Chudal.

Low visibility had caused the cancellation of 117 flights from Dec 9 to 13-24 flights on Sunday, 28 on Monday, 34 on Tuesday, 16 on Wednesday and 15 on Thursday.

"For large carriers, loss per flight is around US$1,000 and for small carriers it's between US$500 and US$600 per flight," said Buddha Air executive manager Rupesh Joshi.

Loss incurred from cancellation of all flights is about US$100,000. However, the weather in other domestic destinations such as Pokhara, Nepalgunj and Dhangadhi has been good.

"There is rescheduling of flights even in these destinations and in other places the weather is generally unfavourable," Joshi said.

"This is a common phenomenon in winter and flight disruption may continue until Jan 15 next year," he added.

A weather forecast bulletin from the government's Meteorological Forecasting Division has predicted an improvement on Friday.
