General election will be called soon, says Singapore PM
LEE: Singapore is at a turning point, after having just completed 50 successful years and starting on its next 50 years of nationhood.
Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he would be calling for the General Election "soon" to seek the people's mandate to take Singapore into its next phase.
In his National Day rally speech Sunday night, Lee said: "Soon, I will be calling for elections, to ask for your mandate to take Singapore into our next phase."
He said Singapore was at a turning point, after having just completed 50 successful years and starting on its next 50 years of nationhood.
"The coming GE will be critical," he said.
"You will be deciding who governs Singapore for the next five years but more than that, you will be choosing the team that will work with you for the next 15 to 20 years. You will be setting the direction for Singapore's next 50 years. You will be determining the future of Singapore," he said.
Lee said he and his team took very seriously their responsibility to make sure Singapore would last beyond them.
After 50 years, he said, the sense of togetherness and purpose was stronger than before.
"The Singapore spirit shines when we celebrate our successes together.
"If you are proud of what we have achieved together and support the future that we are building, please support me and my team, so that together, we can keep Singapore special for the next 50 years," he said.
Lee said he and his team could not achieve anything just by themselves.
"We have to do it with you, in order to do a good job for you, so that together, we can keep Singapore special for many years to come," he said.
