German exporters advise EU to talk up services deficit with US

BERLIN: German exporters advised the European Union to keep calm in its trade negotiations with the United States and to remind Washington that at stake is not only goods, but also services, where the US runs a surplus with the EU, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.
"Brussels should stick to its course, not get nervous, and also point to the services sector, where the EU has a deficit with the US," Dirk Jandura, president of the Federation of German Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services (BGA), told the Bavarian media group in comments published on Wednesday.
"I generally think that the EU is pursuing a deliberately factual and strategically skilful approach," Jandura said. "It has essentially united the interests of the member states while negotiating with the US on equal footing. And it has done so without escalating the conflict."
The German news agency reported, US President Donald Trump's plans to impose additional tariffs starting July 9 if the EU does not make concessions to the US on trade issues.
The trade group said if the EU can't get an agreement with the US, it would not be catastrophic. The importance of the US as a trading partner should not be underestimated - or overestimated.
"If no good solutions can be found with the US, it would certainly have very negative consequences," Jandura said. "But it would not be the end of the world. We should keep a cool head."
