Outfits at January 10, 2023's Golden Globes ceremony came in a range of styles and vibes, with an emphasis on self-expression ahead of any particular fashion trend. From Laverne Cox to Jenna Ortega and Jamie Lee Curtis, here is a panorama of some of the most noteworthy outfits spotted in Los Angeles on the first red carpet of the year.
The dress code: come as you are. No, we're not talking about a fast-food chain's advertising campaign, but rather the prestigious Golden Globes ceremony.
The very first red carpet of the year showed that we're well and truly on the path towards a more personal and inclusive fashion, in line with changes over recent months.
The event allowed guests to (finally) mix evening wear with original style and even comfort.A most encouraging observation highlighted by the presence of many celebrities who are working to pave the way for more inclusiveness, whether in terms of body shape, gender, or age.
More varied outfits
Self-expression does not necessarily mean extravagance; most of the event dressing classics made an appearance at the Golden Globes ceremony. Ruffles, sheer fabrics, glitter, and pleating were obviously on display.
Michelle Williams wore Gucci, as did Salma Hayek and Jenna Ortega, Claire Danes chose Giambattista Valli, Kaley Cuoco was in Vera Wang, Margot Robbie picked Chanel Haute Couture, Jessica Chastain showed up in Oscar de la Renta, and Viola Davis in Jason Wu, all livening up the red carpet in chic and glamorous outfits.
But the looks had a certain relaxed quality to them, in often diaphanous fabrics, and that makes all the difference.
Others put the accent on bold dressing that transmitted ideas of empowerment, putting self-expression front and center, and leaving society's stereotypical ideas about beauty and fashion resolutely in the closet.
Actresses Dolly de Leon and Regina Hall stood out in leather dresses, the first in AZ Factory, the latter in a lovely Monique Lhuillier design, while British actress Emma D'Arcy got noticed for her ultra-layered oversized suit, worn with ultra high heels and Megan Stalter opted for a long dress with a high slit, paired with long gloves and a silver mini-bag.
While Jamie Lee Curtis caused a sensation in a sublime pantsuit topped with a cape made entirely of lace by Maison Valentino, Laverne Cox was once again the talk of the town in a vintage dress - an environmentally friendly choice from John Galliano's spring-summer 2007 collection.
And to complete this magnificent panorama, Michaela Jae Rodriguez walked the red carpet in an oversized bow-shaped satin dress by Balmain, while director Domee Shi combined elegance and comfort in a Barbie pink colored suit teamed with cargo pants of the same color.Meanwhile all the actresses of TV series "Abbott Elementary" (Quinta Brunson, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter and Sheryl Lee Ralph) sported incredibly glamorous outfits, that were nonetheless each very distinct from one another..
End of an era for tuxedos
While their looks may be less scrutinized than those of their female counterparts, men are also switching things up on the red carpet. Although black & white tuxedos were present, many tried to modernize the style, or step away from this classic tha is eternally associated with male elegance.
As a result, many guests opted for this 'must-have' but skipped the bow tie, while others preferred colorful versions.
And then there were those who were all about breaking traditional gender codes. That was the case of Jeremy Pope who turned heads in an all-leather look, as well as of Canadian influencer Josh Richards who chose a casual suit with fine stripes that revealed a transparent crop top, and of course of Billy Porter, who once again electrified the red carpet in a half-suit half-dress creation in vibrant pink.
So many outfits that prove that self-expression and inclusiveness have finally found a spot on the red carpet.
