Government, President Erdogan still in power: Embassy

The Turkish Embassy in Malaysia today reiterated that the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is still in power, denying the success of the coup attempt.

In a statement to Bernama, the embassy also denied the involvement of the entire Turkish Armed Forces in the attempt, which aimed at overthrowing a democratically elected government of Turkey.

"Our president and government are in charge. Turkish Armed Forces are not involved in the coup attempt in its entirety.

"It was conducted by a clique within the armed forces and received a well-deserved response from our nation," the embassy said.

According to reports, a military statement on Turkish media said Friday that the armed forces had fully seized power in the country, but Erdogan said early Saturday the coup attempt had failed, urging people to protect democracy.

Erdogan blamed the ongoing coup attempt on the movement led by Turkey's Islamic scholar Fethullah Gulen now living in the US state of Pennsylvania, reports said.
