'Help end humanitarian crisis in Syria' - DPM

The world has been urged to speak in one voice and condemn the inhumane massacre of civilians in Syria.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the United Nations should undertake drastic measures to end the humanitarian crisis in Aleppo.

As a member of the United Nations Security Council, he said, Malaysia has played a crucial role in supporting UN's resolution in condemning the violence in Syria.

As such, Ahmad Zahid hoped a peaceful resolution to the conflicts can be sought to avoid several concerned parties in their efforts to take advantage of the situation.

“When I chaired the UN Security Council, I represented Malaysia and several resolutions were proposed.

“I hope the resolutions would not just end there because what is happening in Aleppo is inhumane and we don't want the resolution to become a reason to legitimise the aggressive acts by two big powers,” he said at a press conference after opening the Immigration Day celebrations.

He stressed, the UN should prioritise the fate of Syrians in Aleppo who have inadvertently fell victims of a dispute between several parties.

The deputy premier added, he did not see the violence in Aleppo as a victory against the rebels but a humanitarian crisis with an increasing civilian death toll and destruction to public property.
