WASHINGTON: The January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol building in Washington is set to be revisited, with House Republicans voting to form a new select committee, German Press Agency (dpa) reported Wednesday, citing media reports.

Republican lawmakers argued that members of the previous committee were biased against United States (US) President Donald Trump, according to the Washington Post.

The prior panel had accused Trump of multiple offences and recommended that the Department of Justice pursue charges, though such recommendations are non-binding.

On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters stormed the Capitol as Congress convened to certify Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election. Trump had long claimed, without evidence, that the election was stolen and encouraged his supporters to protest.

Trump has repeatedly downplayed the events, calling it a "day of love" during his campaign for the 2024 election, which he won.

News outlet Politico suggested the creation of the new panel reflects an effort by Republicans to rewrite the history of the Capitol attack.

The riot resulted in multiple deaths, including a rioter shot by police and an officer who died the following day, reportedly from a stroke, though a connection to the Capitol events was not ruled out.

One of Trump's first acts after taking office for second term in January was pardoning all those convicted over the Capitol attack -- including violent rioters who assaulted police officers and far-right extremists who helped orchestrate the assault.
