SINGAPORE:The Singapore authority foiled an attempt to smuggle 8,101 packets of chewing tobacco into the republic using Malaysia-registered lorry at Woodlands Checkpoint on Jan 15.
According to the republic's Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), the items were wrapped in black plastic bags, hidden underneath a pile of wood in the headboard of the lorry.
The authority said the case was referred to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) for further investigation.
“This method of concealment is a cause for concern as similar methods may be used by people with ill intent to smuggle security items into Singapore,” said the ICA in its Facebook today.
It noted that it will continue to conduct security checks on passengers, goods and vehicles so as to safeguard Singapore’s security.
