India riot: Death toll rises to 10, no Malaysian casualties

The death toll in the ongoing riot in Haryana, a north Indian state, has climbed to 10.

According to an AFP report, Haryana police chief Yash Pal Singal told a press conference today that some 150 people were also injured.

However, there were no Malaysian casualties reported yet in the riot, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry said.

In a statement today, the ministry said they are currently monitoring the situation via the Malaysian High Commission in New Delhi.

Nevertheless, the ministry advised all Malaysians to remain vigilant and comply with any advisory issued by the Indian Government.

The protest was sparked on Friday by the Jat community over the issues of public service jobs and placement in the educational institutions.

Curfew had since been imposed by five state governments, namely Sonipat, Gohana, Rohtak, Bhiwani and Jhajjar.

The protest had also spread to New Delhi and Gurgaon, some 30km from the Indian capital.
