PARIS: The European Union needs a "truly fair and sustainable" tariff deal with the United States, Italy Industry Minister Adolfo Urso said on Thursday (July 24) hailing the agreements already signed by Britain and Japan.

AI Brief
  • The EU is negotiating with the US to avoid a 30% tariff deadline set for August 1.
  • Britain and Japan have already secured lower tariffs of 10% and 15%, respectively.
  • France supports continued negotiations but warns the EU may respond if no deal is reached.

Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened a 30% tariff on EU imports, but talks are ongoing on a deal ahead of an Aug. 1 deadline.

Britain negotiated 10% tariffs in May, while Japan settled this week on 15%.

French Finance Minister Eric Lombard said France wanted to give the U.S.-EU negotiations space to continue, but that if they did not result in a deal, EU members would decide how to respond.
