Jakarta attacks: All you need to know

IT was an ordinary Thursday morning in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta when multiple blasts -- caused by a bomb -- rocked the city at 11am.

Below is a timeline of the attacks in the world's most-populous Muslim majority nation:
10.25pm: Kompas TV via its Twitter account reported a fresh round of explosions in central Jakarta.
However, police later said the explosion was believed to be a tyre bursting and not another bomb.

6pm: The Dutch foreign ministry confirmed that one of its citizens is seriously wounded in the attacks.

3.55pm: Indonesian police confirmed seven dead including five attackers and two civilians.

3pm: Indonesian police shot dead four militants suspected to be involved in the Jakarta attacks today, CNN Indonesia reported.

2.20pm: Indonesian President Joko Widodo who cut short a trip to central Java said that the blasts were an ‘act of terror’.
1.40pm: Malaysian Embassy in Indonesia confirms that all Malaysians in Jakarta are reported to be safe.


1.23pm: At least six people were killed in the Jakarta attacks, police said. Police said they suspected a suicide bomber was responsible for at least one of the blasts and up to 14 militant gunmen were involved in the attack, Metro TV reported. "We have previously received a threat from Islamic State that Indonesia will be the spotlight," police spokesman Anton Charliyan told reporters. But he said police did not know who was responsible.
