Japan totally unqualified to seek permanent seat on UN Security Council: Chinese envoy

Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the U.N., made the statement at the U.N. General Assembly's annual debate on Security Council reform.

"This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. It also marks the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration to China from Japanese occupation. Japan waged wars of aggression during World War II, including imposing colonial rule over Taiwan, committing atrocious crimes, and bringing immense suffering to the people of China and other victimized Asian countries," he said.

Fu said that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently made blatant and provocative remarks on Taiwan at the Diet, claiming that a Taiwan contingency could constitute a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan, and implying that Japan might invoke the so-called "right to collective self-defense" for armed intervention across the Taiwan Strait.

It is known to all that there is only one China in the world, that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, the Chinese envoy emphasized.

"Sanae Takaichi's remarks on Taiwan are extremely wrong and dangerous, constituting a gross interference in China's internal affairs and a serious breach of the one-China principle and the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan," Fu continued.

Such remarks challenge international justice, undermine the post-war international order, trample on the basic norms governing international relations, and represent a blatant departure from Japan's basic commitment to the path of peaceful development, he said.

"Such a country is totally unqualified to seek a permanent seat on the Security Council," he stressed.
