The latest on the U.S. Election. Here’s what you need to know:
WHY 270 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER?
- To win the White House, a candidate must win at least 270 electoral votes. Each state gets a certain number of electoral votes based on its number of senators and representatives.
- California, the most populous state, has 55 electoral votes.
- The popular vote doesn't matter in deciding who becomes President. In 2016, Democrat Hillary Clinton received over 2.8 million more votes than her Republican rival Donald Trump.
- Yet, Trump won the election after garnering 305 Electoral votes to Clinton’s 227.

- AP announces that Trump has won Florida and its 29 electoral votes
- Florida is seen as the biggest prize among the battleground states, possibly securing a second term at the While House for Trump.
- Trump has won Iowa (6 electoral votes) and Montana (3).
- A heavily white state, Trump comfortably won Iowa by nine points in 2016 against Clinton. He was leading in polls against Biden in Iowa going into the Elections.
- Trump wins battleground state Ohio and its 18 electoral votes.
- Trump also claimed the state in 2016 where he saw strong support from the blue-collar manufacturing and mining communities.
- Biden won Minnesota, which offers 10 electoral votes, holding on to a state narrowly won by Clinton four years ago.
- Biden has won the state of Hawaii, which offers 4 electoral votes.
- Hawaii is traditionally a Democrat stronghold.
- Biden has won California, Oregon and Washington state, which are all liberal states
- California has 55 electoral votes, the biggest of any state. Oregon has 7 electoral votes while Washington has 12.
- California is also the home state of Biden's running mate Senator Kamala Harris.
- Meanwhile, Trump has won Idaho, a conservative state. Idaho has 4 electoral votes.
- Trump has won the state of Missouri. The state has 10 electoral votes.
- According to AP, Trump beat Clinton in Missouri in 2016 by 18 percentage points.
- Trump has won the state of Kansas. The state has 6 electoral votes.
- In 2016, Trump won Kansas, over Democrat Hillary Clinton by 20 percentage points in Kansas
- Biden has won the state of Colorado. The state has 9 electoral votes.
- Trump had also lost Colorado in 2016, by almost 5 points.
- Biden has won District of Columbia. The district has 3 electoral votes.
- Trump has won the state of Indiana. The state has 11 electoral votes.
- Indiana is the home state of Trump’s running mate, Vice President Mike Pence.
- Trump wins Louisiana (8), Nebraska (5), Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District, North Dakota (3), South Dakota (3) and Wyoming (3), West Virginia (5), Kentucky (8)
- Biden wins New York (29), New Mexico (5), Vermont (3)
- Biden’s win in New York was widely expected as New York is a reliably Democratic state. New Mexico has voted Democrat in the past three presidential elections
