NEW DELHI: Malaysia's engagement with BRICS is becoming increasingly important in strengthening economic cooperation and regional resilience, according to Malaysia's High Commissioner to India Datuk Muzafar Shah Mustafa.

He said the bloc, which comprises several major global economic powers, also plays an important role in shaping the direction of international cooperation, particularly on supply chain-related issues.

“This will be a very good platform for all BRICS member countries as well as partner countries to see how we can address these issues.

“Of course, as we know, BRICS is not a permanent organisation that can influence, for example, decisions made by the United Nations.

“However, I believe any understanding reached at the BRICS level will also provide future direction on how we want to address global issues such as conflicts in the Middle East,” he said during a press conference at the High Commission of Malaysia in New Delhi, India on Wednesday.

His remarks came as the world continues to face geopolitical uncertainty and global supply chain disruptions following the conflict in the Middle East.

Malaysia will participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on May 14 and 15, 2026 as a BRICS Partner Country.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan is scheduled to present Malaysia’' position during two key BRICS sessions, including on issues related to multilateralism, energy security, global supply chains, and the interests of the Global South.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Mohamad is also expected to hold several bilateral meetings, including with his counterparts from Cuba, Russia, and India, to discuss matters of mutual interest and strengthen strategic cooperation between countries.

BRICS is an economic and geopolitical cooperation bloc comprising major emerging economies including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The grouping currently represents nearly half of the world’s population, with a combined economy worth around USD32 trillion, or close to 30% of global economic output.
