A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale was detected in Halmahera, 35km northeast of  Ternate, Indonesia at 4.52am today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department in its website said the quake occurred 1065km southeast of Semporna, Sabah.

It said there is no threat of a tsunami.
