The majority of Muslims in Indonesia will celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri tomorrow after the republic's government declared the moon was sighted at six places in the country.
Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin in an announcement aired live over local televisions said the decision to set the date for Hari Raya was made by ulamas in a sidang isbat (confirmation meeting) held this evening.
"Six personnel said they saw the moon and four among them were in Kupang, Nusa Tenggara Timur while two others were in Gresik, East Java," he said.
He said the meeting attended by all Islamic organisation leaders including Muhammadiyah and Nahdatul Ulama agreed to celebrate on 1 Syawal tomorrow after confirming the moon was sighted this evening.
Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world with more than 70 per cent of its 300 million population professing Islam.
