MOSCOW: International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said that new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump pose a significant risk to the global outlook and called on Washington and its partners to work to resolve trade tensions.
"We are still assessing the macroeconomic implications of the announced tariff measures, but they clearly represent a significant risk to the global outlook at a time of sluggish growth.
"It is important to avoid steps that could further harm the world economy. We appeal to the United States and its trading partners to work constructively to resolve trade tensions and reduce uncertainty," Georgieva said in a statement on Thursday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
On Wednesday, Trump signed an executive order imposing a 10 per cent base tariff on all US imports starting April 5, while additional, reciprocal tariffs on countries with the largest trade deficits will take effect on April 9.
