Senior Advisor to the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity (HCHF), Herizal Hazri challenged conventional narratives that portray religious hatred as merely a moral or cultural failing.

“Discrimination against Muslims, Christians, and other communities is part of a chronic struggle for power,” he said in his address at the international conference “Islamophobia in Focus: Unveiling Bias, Shattering Stigmas” held in Baku.

He emphasized that religion’s central role in society often renders it a tool for political mobilisation which used both to incite division and to secure authority.

“We must stop viewing discrimination solely through the lens of religion and start recognizing it for what it often is: a calculated exercise in power,” he urged.

Hazri called for systemic solutions to what he described as a structural abuse of religious identity.

“This is not just a moral issue. It’s a systemic problem that demands a systemic fix,” he concluded, underscoring the urgent need for policy reform and political accountability.

His intervention added critical depth to the conference’s agenda, urging all to move beyond symbolic gestures and commit to meaningful structural change in the global fight against Islamophobia and religious discrimination.
