ST. PETERSBURG: Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday that a peaceful solution to the ongoing Israel–Iran conflict is possible and suggested that countries in the Global South — including Russia — could play a constructive role in ending the crisis.
Speaking at the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025 organised by Roscongress Foundation, Putin said that many nations in the Middle East have relationships with both Israel and Iran, putting them in a position to help de-escalate tensions.
“I believe it’s entirely possible. Many countries in the region have, in some ways, complicated but stable ties with both sides. That gives reason to believe that the Global South, particularly regional countries, can influence the process to bring an end to the acute phase of the conflict,” Putin said.
He stressed that Russia maintains communication with both Israel and Iran and is offering ideas — not formal mediation — on possible ways forward.
“We’re not seeking to mediate, We’re simply offering ideas. If those ideas are accepted by both sides, we will welcome that outcome.” ,” Putin emphasized.
Putin also addressed the broader security concerns that lie at the heart of the conflict, highlighting the longstanding tension between Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy and Israel’s insistence on safeguarding its own security.
“In my view, a balanced solution that addresses the interests of both parties does exist,” he said. “Russia believes that the security of one nation should not come at the cost of another’s.”
The Russian leader added that he had shared his vision for a potential resolution with key stakeholders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, and U.S. President Joe Biden.
“Our proposals are currently being discussed. We maintain near-daily contact with our Iranian counterparts,” Putin said, expressing hope that Moscow’s ideas would eventually gain traction.
While Putin did not disclose the content of Russia’s proposals, his remarks signal Moscow’s intent to position itself as a stabilizing force amid rising instability in the Middle East.
The comments were met with applause from the audience at SPIEF, reflecting international interest in alternative diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions.
This event is timed to coincide with visit to the SPIEF, organised by the Roscongress Foundation
